Chloe Romanos

I like to create statement jewellery that stands out on the body. I imagine and design pieces that are small pieces of wearable art.

I am a French jewellery designer and maker. I design and hand-craft all my creations from my home studio in Stanford in the Vale, Oxfordshire. I work with recycled precious metals (sterling silver and gold) and a variety of precious and semi-precious stones (amongst my favourites: labradorite, opal, garnet, tourmaline). I use traditional silversmithing techniques to create one of a kind designs.

My initial training in archaeology and my fascination for Art and Crafts has inspired me to learn about transforming metals and combining different materials to create little poetic keepsakes. I like to let my imagination be guided by memories of inspiring places I have visited, quotes from books and poems I have read, or by the material itself.

The elegance of Art Nouveau designs, with its strong curved lines and obsession for myriad of wings, is what inspires my ‘Fly Away' Collection. I like to play with the space in between, with shadows and with the way the piece can envelop the body and become part of it.

I have studied jewellery making and silversmithing at the Jewellery School in Birmingham. I also hold a Master in Art History and Archaeology from Sorbonne University in Paris and a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Birmingham.

While I was analysing in great details the texture of handmade pottery at the museum of Mycenae (cited in Homer’s poems), in Greece, it became a fascination for me to look at the worn, rough, pitted, crackled textured surfaces of ancient artefacts. The time they have spent buried inside the earth has given them another look and, guided by our own imagination, another meaning. They are precious memories of ancient treasures which is what I try to capture in my 'Echoes of the Past' Collection.

My work has been showcased in exhibitions including at the British Museum and the Royal Cornwall Museum. Each year, I take part in Oxfordshire Artweeks Festival.
