Elizabeth Murphy
Pottery has always been a fixture of my life. It was a passionate hobby for me since childhood and in graduate school I pursued a degree in decorative arts where I studied ceramics from an academic perspective. Fully dedicating myself to ceramics, my background influences the nature of my work where I reference traditional and historic prototypes across cultures and centuries. My unique approach reveals the poetry of these archetypal forms through textural interventions. Working in an improvisational and expressionistic style with meandering and woven texture, the vessel form is revealed, concealed, embraced and transformed by the applied surface texture. Slip, underglaze and glaze play an important part in the composition adding tonal layers that highlight and obscure aspects of the texture and form. Gesture, mark making and paint strokes are equally as important in adding extra depth and dynamism to the piece. Each vessel is an investigation where no surface is the same and no two works are alike as each piece seems to lead on to another inquiry in different clay bodies, texture and glaze combinations. The overall effect evokes an atmospheric quality to the vessels and references landscapes, skyscapes, music and poetry.
My work has been included in exhibitions throughout the UK, notably Delamore Arts and Messum’s West. I exhibit my work regularly at ceramics and craft fairs throughout the country and I regularly exhibit during Oxfordshire Artweeks.
