Lucy Ballard
I was initially inspired by the mid-century studio potters and their shift away from industrialisation, a return to hand made and the artisanal. I am still attracted to making useful and necessary things that will be handled daily with pleasure. My study of archaeology was always focussed on artefacts, and the marks of makers - fingerprints on the earliest of pottery, ink blots on manuscripts, the stories of their crafts.
I mostly make by throwing, on a 1970s industrial wheel. I use two sorts of clay, a fine white and a mixed red stoneware. I decorate with bold brush strokes of oxide mixes and pops of coloured slips. The design process always begins with what I’d like to use in my home next. Every breakage an opportunity!
